For Rugby
Optimal Performance Environments
The combative nature of Rugby means that athletes are required to run at, over and around people. If you don’t have the ball, your job is to stand in the way of the person who does and try to collide with the person running at you.
As coaches, we have been trained to use demonstrations, questions, skills and games to create opportunities for children and adults to participate and develop.
What we have not been trained to do is set up the physiological development of the sensory, sensory motor and perceptual motor systems that allow safe, high level participation.
Ever wonder why players and teams are not making the progress you expect even though you have gone through things many times with them?

DESTINATION 23
Play until 23 years of age (At least!)
Today’s reality for many young rugby players is that they will not make it into a development player programme by the time they are 16. They then feel that they have failed.
If you are not selected for an academy or an equivalent type of team do not give up. Physiological development takes a while, with most not achieving their full potential until in their 20’s. Being measured and sorted at 15 and 16 doesn’t help. For example, Courtney Lawes did not start playing rugby seriously until his late teens.
DESTINATION 23
You won’t actually know how good you can be until you are at least 23.
You have to apply yourself physically to develop the athleticism and skills needed to perform at your optimum. This may happen for some early developers who get noticed from U14’s to U16’s, but for the majority, this happens much later. Think long term. You must apply long term training regimes to develop your ability.
To be able to play rugby is a gift, not only for the joy of the game but also for the way it is contructed through respect for the laws and how it ties you into to the global community.
